"Writing was a gateway to some of my favorite opportunities at the University of Iowa!"
Friday, April 17, 2026

In this flagship series, we’re highlighting graduating University of Iowa students who have woven writing into their academic journeys across disciplines. Through these interviews, these exceptional students show how pairing writing with any major strengthens thinking, communication, and impact.

Today we are featuring Kate Wolfe, graduating with a BA in Ethics and Public Policy from the College of Liberal Arts.

Kate Wolfe will graduate in May 2026 with a B.A. in Ethics and Public Policy and a minor in News and Media Literacy. Through her work as a Writing Fellow and local journalist, she has developed a passion for language, storytelling, and meaningful communication, which she looks forward to carrying into her next chapter as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in North Macedonia.

In a few short sentences, tell us how writing impacted your time here at the University of Iowa?
Writing was a gateway to some of my favorite opportunities at the University of Iowa! As a journalist, I was able to connect with people across the community and tell stories that mattered. In the Writing Center, I worked with students and faculty who pushed me to take ownership of my voice and inspired me to revise. Over time, my skills grew a lot, and writing became both a way to connect with others and to better understand my own experiences throughout these four years.

What was one of your favorite classes or activities related to writing?
Participating in the Writing Fellows program was an incredible experience and deepened my understanding of writing as a collaborative and evolving process. As a peer Writing Fellow, I was paired with a class each semester and worked with students individually to help them develop their ideas and strengthen their writing skills.

What advice would you give to incoming students about writing at Iowa?
Embrace writing as a process, not something you're simply "good" or "bad" at. Some of your best work and most important growth will begin with truly terrible sentences.

What are your plans for post-graduation? Any projects, continued studies, or exciting work news we can share?
After graduation, I have been offered a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in North Macedonia.
