Today we are featuring Mya Kemna, graduating with a BA in English/Creative Writing from College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and a BBA Management and BBA Marketing from Tippie College of Business.
I am a senior from Algona, Iowa triple majoring in English/Creative Writing, Marketing, and Management. On campus I am involved in the Professional Business Fraternity Delta Sigma Pi, Head Tutor at the Frank Business Communication Center, AOA at University Housing and Dining, and am a group fitness instructor at the REC. In my free time I love reading, writing, spending time with friends and family, and hanging with my cat.
In a few short sentences, tell us how writing impacted your time here at the University of Iowa?
Being a Creative Writing Major and working at the Frank Center has allowed me to become a better communicator and strength my grammatical skills. I love having the opportunity to use skills learned in my English classes and help students on various projects and assignments.
What was one of your favorite classes or activities related to writing?
Currently I am in a honors non-fiction writing course with Professor Tisa Bryant and I have enjoyed the personal writing aspect. Through workshop and various essay assignments I have been able to strengthen my creative writing side with also incorporating different writing techniques.
What advice would you give to incoming students about writing at Iowa?
Do not be afraid to ask for help and go into writing centers. As a tutor we are there to help you and your writing!
What are your plans for post-graduation? Any projects, continued studies, or exciting work news we can share?
After college, I will be working full time at Cottingham & Butler as a Client Consultant in their Employee Benefits Division in Des Moines, Iowa. As for my writing I plan to continue my work on my novel and other short essays with the hopes of one day becoming a published author.
