Heidi Schoenberg

In this flagship series, we’re highlighting graduating University of Iowa students who have woven writing into their academic journeys across disciplines. Through these interviews, these exceptional students show how pairing writing with any major strengthens thinking, communication, and impact. At Iowa, our commitment to writing across the disciplines sets us apart, ensuring students in every field can develop this essential skill and carry it into whatever comes next!

Today we are featuring Heidi Schoenberg, a business major graduating with a BBA from the Tippie College of Business (Analytical Economics) and a BA from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Ethics and Public Policy). Heidi is pursuing dual degrees in Analytical Economics and Ethics & Public Policy, with a Spanish minor and a Certificate in International Business. She is a Head Tutor at the Frank Business Communication Center in the Tippie College of Business, where she has worked for the past two years. She has held multiple leadership roles on campus, including co founder and president of the Tippie Consulting Club, president of the Tippie Business Honor Society, and secretary and social media manager of the Economic Student Association.

In a few short sentences, tell us how writing impacted your time here at the University of Iowa?
Writing shaped my time at the University of Iowa by showing me that strong communication is a core skill across every field. I came in unsure of what I wanted to do, but through business communication courses in Tippie, I discovered a style of writing that really resonated with me. From there, I intentionally sought out more opportunities to develop those skills, through advanced business communication classes and internships that involved copywriting or marketing. Over time, writing became a consistent thread connecting everything I did, even if the subject of the activities was different. Finally, it played a key role in shaping my career path now in consulting where my writing skills are something I'll use everyday.

What was one of your favorite classes or activities related to writing?
One of my favorite classes related to writing was Advanced Business Presentation, taught by Pam Bourjaily. I had taken one class before with Pam, and it was tough, but I learned so much. The more advanced class allowed me to build on the skills I learned in the previous class (Business Communication
and Protocol) and apply them in more creative settings, while also helping me gain confidence writing beyond traditional research papers.

What advice would you give to incoming students about writing at Iowa?
Get involved in writing, even if it’s not a central part of your major or career path. Strong communication skills can open unexpected doors; for me, working at the Frank Center led to an internship where I started by ghostwriting articles and ultimately transitioned into financial modeling, which is closer to my post graduation job.

What are your plans for post-graduation? Any projects, continued studies, or exciting work news we can share?
I will be joining McKinsey and Company as a Business Analyst after I graduate!
