Student Publications
The University of Iowa is home to a remarkable range of student publications, each of which is staffed, designed, managed, and written entirely by current students. Our publications give students the opportunity to collaborate on creative projects, build and manage teams, and develop technical and professional experience necessary for careers in publishing, media, arts administration, and many other fields. Student publications are sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Boundless/Translate Iowa Project
Boundless is a journal of works in translation published by the Translate Iowa Project, a student organization dedicated to undergraduate translation in all its forms: literary, environmental, and cultural.
The Broken Clock
The Broken Clock is a literary magazine featuring writing and art that explores the concept of time and our universal and individual experiences moving through it.
Catharsis
Catharsis is a publication featuring works of creative nonfiction. Through a print publication and its anonymous "Confessions" series, Catharsis reimagines the limits of the nonfiction genre to be inclusive of diverse voices, forms, and subjects.
Cave Writing Magazine
Cave Writing Magazine is a monthly online publication that features chapters of larger literary works, providing a space for novelists and longer form writers who are not traditionally represented in campus publications.
Earthwords
The University of Iowa's original undergraduate literary review, founded in 1980, earthwords showcases the creative works of undergraduates in literature and the arts while providing students with the professional experience of producing a print literary publication.
FOOLS
FOOLS Magazine unites creative and journalistic writing with striking visual design to create a multidisciplinary arts and culture magazine. FOOLS employs a unique workshop-based approach to involve its authors and artists in editorial collaboration.
Horizon
Horizon Magazine is an online and print literary publication embracing the dichotomy of new horizons, highlighting creative works that explore both the beauty of the destination and the struggle of the journey to find hope.
Ink Lit Mag
Ink Lit Mag is an undergraduate literary review dedicated to showcasing the works of first-year students at the University of Iowa. Ink is often referred to as "the teaching publication," providing first-year students with an early opportunity to manage and produce a print publication in a supportive environment.
New Moon Magazine
New Moon Magazine is a monthly literary journal that comes in the form of just one sheet of paper, printed front and back with flash fiction, flash nonfiction, and short poetry from undergraduates. Issues are widely distributed throughout the University of Iowa and downtown Iowa City to provide the community with consistent, curated access to campus voices.
Orlando
Orlando Literary Magazine is an undergraduate literary magazine that focuses on amplifying LGBTQIA+ stories. Its name comes from the 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf, a groundbreaking queer work that follows themes of gender fluidity and sexuality.
Prison Writing Project
The University of Iowa Prison Writing Project connects the writing community on campus with prison writing communities in Iowa and beyond. The project seeks to foster and support self-expression by the imprisoned, driven by the belief that these voices offer unique contributions to the literary landscape.
snapshots
snapshots is a collaboration between writers, illustrators, and educators to create a magazine that is accessible and engaging to children ages 4-14. By working closely with the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, snapshots aims to make a positive impact in children's lives through community service and appreciation of the arts.
Tree Hugger
Tree Hugger is an environmental literary magazine that aims to foster a creative and collaborative community through an emphasis on ecological awareness, accessibility, and a shared passion for the preservation of nature.
Wilder Things
Wilder Things is an online and print publication that showcases intercollegiate work from around the world. It is dedicated to uplifting speculative literature in academic settings, with a focus on such genres as science fiction, fantasy, horror, comedy, historical, and mythos.
Venus
Venus Magazine is a publication specifically featuring romance fiction and poetry from students at the University of Iowa. Founded in 2024, it aims to uplift a full range of student voices in the romance genre.
Zealous
Culture, style, art, advice–Zealous is an inclusive magazine covering all things college. Zealous’s staff of writers, photographers and graphic designers colaborate to create a semesterly magazine focused on pop culture and editorials.
