Imagine, create, and write with the very best.

There's no better place in the world to study creative writing than at the University of Iowa. For undergraduates, our English and creative writing major combines rigorous literary study with a workshop-style focus on student work. We also offer a screenwriting degree where students learn the fundamentals of the genre and acquire the essential skills to write for film and television.

For the graduate students, the Iowa Writers' Workshop brings poets and fiction writers to Iowa City to work on their manuscripts and exchange ideas, and the Nonfiction Writing Program allows students to explore new approaches to creative nonfiction while developing an appreciation for the genre’s history. Two other innovative creative programs include the Center for the Book—an arts and research program dedicated to the past, present, and future of the book—and the Spanish Language Creative Writing Program

The writing and communication skills that all students gain at Iowa will benefit them long after they leave campus — both professionally and personally.

“The classes have been extremely beneficial to my growth as a writer and critical reader, and the instructors I’ve encountered have been unforgettable."
