Enhance your scientific research and communication skills.
Scientists who foster information-sharing are essential for the public communication of and engagement with science. Although traditional scientific training does not necessarily prepare scientists to be effective communicators outside of academia, funding agencies and research institutions are increasingly encouraging researchers to extend beyond peer-reviewed publishing and communicate their results directly to the greater public. At Iowa, becoming a Latham Fellow is one way for undergraduate researchers to start this conversation.
The Latham Science Engagement Fellowship Program (part of The Iowa Sciences Academy) enhances research opportunities and strengthens science outreach communication skills for undergraduate students. Once selected for the Latham Fellows program, students complete two courses, design and implement outreach projects, and participate in a year-end event that highlights their achievements. At the completion of the program, students will receive a $1,000 fellowship stipend. Students may also have access to funding for summer research.
Those accepted to the Latham Fellowship Program will develop fluency in communicating science to diverse audiences, work in interdisciplinary settings, demonstrate the "broader impact" of scientific research, strengthen future career and/or award applications.
